The George Inn
The George Inn is currently not operating…recent tenant defaulted on the lease and the community are in discussion on potential ownership by a Community Benefit Society.
This will take some time, freehold owners Barchester Court Limited are open to approach from potential, competent folk to take on a short term lease in order to open The George Inn for the coming season. If this is you then please email barchester@yahoo.com we would love to hear from you.
There has been a Public Ale house on the site of the George Inn that we know and love today since St. Michael’s Church was built in the 14th Century. As with many Devon villages, prosperous from the wool trade in the 13th century, the pub provided accommodation for the workers that came in to build the church. Like “The George”, many pubs were built on land originally owned by the Church, hence the high number of “Church House Inns” in and around Devon.
